Execution of the PreNatal Program for the benefit of communities in the area of influence

The project responded to the high level of ignorance about prenatal health and preventable disabilities in Amazonian communities in Ecuador, where diagnoses revealed that more than 80% of the population was unaware of basic prevention practices (such as medical check-ups and family planning). Its objective was to create a culture of prevention by training Petroamazonas EP officials, community leaders and local partners (health, education) to reduce prenatal and postnatal risks in three operational areas of the Amazon.

Three levels of training (advanced, intermediate and basic) with university endorsement were implemented, benefiting 278 participants (149 in the West Zone, 129 in the Center-East). As a result, 55 professionals (advanced level) and 100 leaders (basic level) strengthened skills in prevention and project design. This also made it possible to reach 2358 people through 885 workshops with adults, campaigns with 1,075 adolescents (“No Harm to Third Parties”) and 398 home visits/fairs. Situational diagnoses exposed critical problems (e.g., 13.2% of women suffered violence during pregnancy in Centro-Este), and 2 local projects were designed for the prevention of disabilities and teenage pregnancy.

The project generated lasting local capacities: participants replicate knowledge in their communities (e.g., leaders make home visits), and partnerships with public institutions (MSP, MIES) ensure continuity in preventive actions. The methodology adapted to ancestral knowledge and the integration of projects in local agendas (such as Petroamazonas’ digital marketing model for CSR) guarantee sustainability. Despite limitations due to COVID-19 (North zone not executed), the model is replicable with adjustments in emergencies.
